Project Description
Domestic violence is a learned behavior. It is important to intervene with children who have witnessed domestic violence to break the cycle of abuse by teaching anger management, non-violent conflict resolution, and respect for others.
The Hubbard House Helping At Risk Kids Program (HARK) is a violence prevention program inaugurated in 1995 in response to the high number of juveniles from violent homes in the juvenile justice system. The goal of HARK is to educate children from violent homes, ages 3 to 17, to prevent future incidences of domestic violence. The course is a 12-week group educational program during which participants learn the different types of abuse, the characteristics of healthy and unhealthy relationships, non-violent conflict resolution skills, and effective communication.
Children who experience violence repeatedly are at a substantially greater risk of arrest and other negative outcomes. Locally, a study by Professor Michael Hallett of the University of North Florida revealed that 43 percent of children in Jacksonville who witnessed three or more instances of domestic violence were subsequently arrested for a crime as a juvenile, nearly double the rate of those who witnessed one to two instances of violence. These statistics underscore the reality that children, regardless of education and socio-economic status become at-risk whenever there is domestic violence in their homes. HARK assists children and youth through education and safety planning, self-esteem building, positive ways of dealing with anger and conflict management, and case management services developed with the parent's input.
