Project Description

Cancer imposes a heavy economic burden on cancer patients and their families. When cancer patients need on-going treatment, the cost and difficulty of finding transportation or lodging can present challenges, especially if they have to travel away from their home community. Unfortunately, some patients will miss their treatment because they are not able to travel to it.

To ensure we connect cancer patients to the resources they need, the American Cancer Society has a 24/7/365 hotline available offering free information, support and connection with local resources at 1-800-ACS-2345 or Cancer.org.

How does this impact the Jacksonville community? In 2016, the American Cancer Society provided nearly 4,500 rides to 200 cancer patients in Baker, Clay, Duval, Nassau, and St Johns counties, and we expect the same or greater in 2017. Sadly, due to limited resources, we could not meet all the transportation needs for patients and about 1,600 trip requests were not fulfilled.

Additionally, in late 2017, the American Cancer Society will be breaking ground on the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation Hope Lodge in Jacksonville, FL to provide free lodging to cancer patients traveling to Jacksonville for cancer treatment.
