Project Description

Hope at Hand is a nonprofit organization that provides poetry lessons for at-risk youth populations.

I run out of real reasons
And places to hide
My heart began aching
There was no one at my side
I whisper
Please help me
I can't go on
I am taking my life back
and setting it free

Hope at Hand needs funding for art supplies and writing materials.

Hope at Hand blends poetry, art, and therapeutic strategies into sessions that provide healing and comfort for youth in high stress situations. Art supplies support our programming at our partner agencies: Pretrial Detention Facility, Department of Juvenile Justice, Girls Court, Betty Griffin House, PACE Center for Girls, River Oak Recovery High School, Gateway/Steps to Recovery, Hope Haven Children’s Clinic, Youth Crisis Center, Big Brothers/Big Sisters and more!

Speaking of time
I really want to turn back
To have cupcakes in school
To have ice cream cakes
Turns out
Living life is hard to do
But I’m not gonna settle
Something will come with time

Participants read poetry and engage in discussions that connects the poem to their personal situations. They write original poems to deepen their understanding of their struggles and illuminate possible solutions to improve their lives. All sessions strengthen the concepts of choice and change. The Hope at Hand staff has specialized training in Elementary Education, Educational Leadership, Montessori Education, theater, counseling, and poetry therapy and all of these elements are found in this unique programming. All sessions are coupled with other art forms providing an environment where youth can experience success and joy.

I am hungry and very forgiving.
I wonder if I can get a job.
I hear that it is very easy but it’s difficult.
I see a lot of opportunities out there.
I want to learn how to change myself.
I am soft and surviving.

Why support Hope at Hand programming? From the (CDC) Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: “Childhood experiences, both positive and negative, have a tremendous impact on future violence, victimization, and lifelong health and opportunity. Much of the research is referred to as Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and is linked to risky behaviors, chronic health conditions, low life potential, and early death. As the number of ACEs increases, so does the risk."

Hope at Hand works diligently to challenge Adverse Childhood Experiences through poetry but we lack the funds necessary to complete the art component of our programming. Please support our mission!
