Project Description

Children receiving free/reduced lunch at school may not have access to food on the weekends or school breaks, putting them as risk for hunger, which is detrimental to both a child’s physical and psychological health. Food-insecure children are at higher risk for health problems and chronic illnesses. Missing meals also negatively impacts ability to learn and behavior at school.

LSS' Backpack Program ensures underserved children do not go hungry when school meals are not available by providing free, nutritious food every week of the year.

LSS distributes bags containing 5.5-7.5 pounds of child-friendly food (granola bars, oatmeal, crackers, etc.) to children through partner sites (primarily schools during the school year and community centers during the summer). Partners distribute it discreetly to avoid embarrassing the children.

LSS currently provides food to 500 students each week throughout Duval and Clay Counties. Your support can help us feed more kids!
